A Place I Always Stop

There’s a little spot along US 41 near Sun City that I rarely drive past without slowing down. It’s nothing more than a pull-off beside a pasture, but over the years it’s become one of those places I find myself returning to whenever the light looks promising.

This morning didn’t disappoint. With all the rain we’ve been getting lately, towering clouds have been building before sunrise, catching the first warm light in ways that make you pull over whether you’re running late or not. For a few quiet minutes, the sky seemed to glow from within.

The cows are almost always there, and they never seem quite convinced about my intentions. They’ll stop grazing, lift their heads, and stare as if they’re trying to decide whether I’m friend, stranger, or just another odd fellow standing beside the road with a camera. I like to think we’ve reached an understanding by now.

Places like this remind me that some of Florida’s best moments aren’t found in famous destinations. They’re tucked away along forgotten roads, waiting for anyone willing to stop for a few minutes and pay attention.
